Arriving in America with a broken heart as a young political refugee was a devastating event. Leaving behind my homeland and my childhood friends crushed my sense of security and identity and created in me a self-defeating mindset molded by grief and fear.
Five years into the process of learning the language, laws, and culture of the land, I married shortly after the initial meeting. The marriage was painfully dysfunctional from the onset yet lasted seventeen years. It further affected my mental and emotional health and caused me to suffer from seizures and chronic depression.
